Move gets nowhere

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon explicitly told reporters in
New York on Tuesday that it was not legally possible for the world body
to receive Taiwan's purported application for UN membership.

What the UN secretary-general stated is a generally-accept fact in the
international community. This fact is underscored by that the diplomatic
relations the People's Republic of China (PRC) has established and well
maintained with 169 countries, all of which acknowledge that there is
only one China in the world and Taiwan is a part of it.

The statement Ban made has strictly followed the principle of the UN
Constitution that the world body cannot accept a region with no
sovereignty as its member. UN Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, made it
quite clear that the government of the PRC is the sole legitimate
government of China.

Taiwan has never been a sovereign state. Chinese people's struggle in
history to keep it from being occupied by foreign invaders and its
liberation from Japanese occupation and return to China after the World
War II speak volumes for its status as an integral part of China.

It is because of this undeniable fact that the United Nations and the
majority countries stick to the one-China policy on the question of
Taiwan.

It is not difficult to see through the trick Chen Shui-bian has been
playing on the question of "Taiwan Independence".

Chen himself and his party will be the biggest beneficiary from the
trouble that has been brought about by his move to push for the island
"independence".

He hopes that his provocation of the mainland will cause crisis across
the Taiwan Straits, which will divert the island's people's attention
from the corruption involving both his government and his family and from
the great mess his inability as leader has created.

Ever increasing contact and cooperation across the Straits in recent
years have benefited people on both sides. Anyone of vision should be
aware of the fact that closer ties and final reunification with the
motherland is where the future and prosperity of the island lies.

So Chen's move for "Taiwan independence" is not in the interest of people
on both sides. The real motivation behind is his fear that his political
ambition will be ruined.

The barriers his government has set up for the Olympic torch relay
passing through the island tells his real attitude toward relations
across the Straits.

Yet, his secessionist move against the will of people is no other than
playing with fire, and will yield nothing but the destruction of his own
conspiracy.
