Learn Chinese online - Putin tries anew to stop missile shield

WORLD / America

Putin tries anew to stop missile shield

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-03 06:27

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - Russian President Vladimir Putin sought anew
Monday to bat down U.S. plans to build a missile defense shield in
Eastern Europe, proposing that the system be expanded and largely
Russian-based.

Neither President Bush nor his aides reacted definitively to the surprise
idea, Putin's second in less than a month on the topic that has sent
U.S.-Russian relations into a tailspin.

Bush says Putin should not fear missile shield

From Sunday afternoon through lunch on Monday, Bush used personal charms,
his family's wealth and a slew of traditional Maine treats to woo Putin
and heal fissures that have the Washington-Moscow alliance at its lowest
point since the Cold War. There was lobster, blueberry pie and striper
fishing in the Atlantic from his dad's prized speedboat all from the
spectacular setting of the century-old Bush summer compound on a craggy
peninsula.

But with all Bush's efforts, it was Putin who appeared to leave
Kennebunkport with the upper hand a situation aptly, if
coincidentally, illustrated by Putin's singular success among their group
at outsmarting fish.

On substantive issues, the Russian leader appeared to neither lose ground
or give any.

He emphasized more talking with Iran about its suspected nuclear weapons
program over the tougher U.N. sanctions on Tehran that Bush wants. There
was no sign that Putin came closer to the Western view that the Serbian
province of Kosovo should be allowed independence. Most dramatically,
Putin again showed up at a meeting with Bush with a proposal on missile
defense that caught the president off guard.

As Putin said at the end of his appearance with Bush before reporters on
the sun-drenched lawn of Walker's Point's main stone-and-shingle home:
"We are here to play."

As a result, Putin traveled on to Guatemala for a decision meeting on the
site for the 2014 winter Olympics likely boosted in the eyes of the world
by the respectful treatment and lavish compliments given him by the
globe's only superpower.

Learn Mandarin online - Yi not interested in working out for Bucks

Sports / NBA Draft 2007

Yi not interested in working out for Bucks

(Journal Sentinel)
Updated: 2007-06-28 16:23

The intrigue surrounding Chinese power forward Yi Jianlian is building,
with less than a week remaining until the National Basketball Association
draft.

Yi Jianlian averaged 24.9 points for the Gundong Southern Tigers last
season in China.

Got something to get off Got something to get off your chest? Voice your
opinion and interact with other fans in our free Bucks Forum. Go to Forum
Advertisement

Buy a link here Yi is no Yao Ming, and in fact has little in common with
the 7-foot-5 Houston Rockets center. Yi is a 7-footer who can dribble,
jump and face the basket. His game has been compared to that of former
Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls forward Toni Kukoc.

Yet many experts aren't sure what to make of Yi, who could be sliding a
bit in the June 28 draft.

The Milwaukee Bucks won't get a first-hand view of Yi, whose camp has
declined a workout request by the team. Bucks director of player
personnel Dave Babcock wanted to go to Los Angeles to take a closer look
but was rebuffed by Yi's agent, Dan Fegan.

"Basically they said they can't work it in the schedule," Babcock said
Friday. "We're not a high priority for them. We'll see what happens."

Fegan has sparked a good share of controversy by requiring teams to come
to Los Angeles to see Yi, by putting restrictions on the type of workouts
his client would do and by having him skip the Orlando pre-draft camp.

Yi did not even go through the physical testing in Orlando, something the
top-rated prospects normally do even if they do not compete in the camp.

The Philadelphia 76ers, who hold the 12th overall pick in the draft,
attended a private workout for Yi earlier this week.

But the Bucks, drafting sixth, were bypassed. Florida power forward
Joakim Noah earlier had declined an invitation to work out with
Milwaukee, although his Gators teammates, Al Horford and Corey Brewer,
auditioned for the Bucks earlier this week.

"It's disappointing, but I'll tell you what," Babcock said. "We still
like him (Yi). He's a good shooter, very skilled, runs. He's not a thin
kid. His English is good. He'll be an impact guy in the NBA next year."

Bucks general manager Larry Harris said he had hoped to give the team's
coaching staff a chance to meet Yi and see him in an individual workout.

"The kid is nearly 7 feet and 240 pounds, and he's getting bigger,"
Harris said.

"He can run the floor. He has great hands, and more of his forte is
facing the basket. From 16, 17, 18 feet, he can make that shot. He's more
athletic than people think."

Yi's age is a matter of debate. He is listed as 19 years old on the
Chinese national team roster, but some say he is really 21 or 22.

He's the true wild card in this draft, a player who might go as high as
No. 5 to the Boston Celtics or slip all the way to Sacramento at No. 10
or the 76ers at No. 12. The Chicago Bulls, at No. 9, also could have some
interest.

Yi played for the Gundong Southern Tigers in the Chinese Basketball
Association last season, and he averaged 24.9 points and 11.5 rebounds
per game. He also has played with Yao as a member of the Chinese national
team and took part in the 2004 Olympics and the 2006 FIBA World
Championship..

"I went to China three years ago, and I spent a lot of time around him,"
Babcock said. "We're prepared on him."

Babcock estimated that he and Harris and scouts Scott Howard and Scott
Roth had seen Yi play 20 times in the last four years.

Howard saw Yi in the Asian Championships last December in Qatar, and
Harris watched him in the 2004 Athens Olympics, where Harris' father,
Del, coached the Chinese team.

"He (Del Harris) thought Yi was a tremendous kid, really bright," Larry
Harris said. ""He had him at a young age, and at that time (in 2004)
thought he could be a small forward."

Harris and Babcock indicated that the Bucks would not be scared to select
Yi on draft night.

"I'm just saying we're still interested," Babcock said.

"If we feel like the player is the best player on the board, we're not
going to shy away from it if we think it would fit our team. Noah is the
same way. If Noah is the best player on the board, we're not going to
turn the page on him just because he won't come work out for us."

Chinese Lesson - Rockets will draft for talent, not position

Sports / Basketball

Rockets will draft for talent, not position

By JONATHAN FEIGEN (Houston Chronicle )
Updated: 2007-06-24 22:36

For all the uncertainty involved with having the 26th pick in the NBA
draft, there is one thing Rockets general manager Daryl Morey does know.

In the annual balancing between finding the best player available and one
who will most likely fill holes, Morey has no difficulty assessing the
importance of fitting a player's talents with the Rockets' needs.

That would be zero, or near zero, for 26, Morey said of the emphasis
placed on need.

"We're a team that's a few solid moves away versus years away from being
very competitive," Morey said. "Given that, the player we pick there is
more for the future than for the now."

Heading into his first draft as Rockets general manager, Morey said he
will not zero in on a power forward to take Juwan Howard's roster spot, a
point guard to develop should Vassilis Spanoulis never come back from
Greece or a center to eventually succeed Dikembe Mutombo as Yao Ming's
backup.

He said he is simply looking for the best player he can find. Coach Rick
Adelman can work on the rotation later.

With that in mind, Morey has several deals in the works in which he could
move up if the right players those the Rockets want more than a team
dealing slip at least to the second half of the first round of the
draft on Thursday.

"If you get to 18 to 20, there's usually some sliders," Morey said.
"Danny Granger, Gerald Green, Jameer Nelson in recent years. Guys who
should have gone high and slipped farther than they should have in many

"So at 18 to 20, there's more value there because you're potentially
going to pick up a top 10 level talent. At 26, generally those guys who
slide are cleaned up by the early 20s. And by 26, there's more normalcy,
and you're in a different tier.

"We have some opportunities to move up. We've done our draft work. We're
very prepared for this draft. I've spent a lot of time on (scenarios to)
trade up, trade down, trade in (to the second round). A lot of different
discussions have filled several days. Often, they'll happen on that night
because your guy is there, or their guy is gone."

Morey also has a pool of players who he believes could produce at least
one prospect that he would happily take with the 26th pick.

That would likely be a player with an outstanding, definable talent, such
as shooters Morris Almond of Rice, Marco Belinelli of Italy or Nick
Fazekas of Nevada; a shot-blocker/finisher such as Sean Williams of
Boston College; or a low-post presence in Glen Davis.

But if things fall right, the Rockets also could find a player fall just
enough from a pool of Colorado State forward/center Jason Smith,
Vanderbilt forward Derrick Byars, Georgia Tech forward Thaddeus Young or
Spanish guard Rudy Fernandez.

"Generally the history of the draft is as you're (drafting) later, the
guy has to have an elite skill to get them on the floor, just to get them
a chance to play," Morey said. "There have been some all-around guys that
have been picked later and done fine. But it's generally more the case
you need some elite skill, rebounding, defending, shooting so a coach
says, 'I have to get him on the floor somehow.'

"Then they have to develop their game around that. But if you have an
all-around guy, and he gets stuck behind somebody else, he never gets
minutes and three years later, he's gone."

The Rockets also could be looking to add a second-rounder as they did
last season when they bought the Magic's second-round choice to take Lior
Eliyahu. The Bucks have the Rockets' second-round pick, the 55th of the
draft, from the Rockets' 2005 trade of Reece Gaines for Mike James.

"A team that is picking well can probably find somebody into the mid-40s,
I would think, that has a chance to contribute," Morey said. "If the
right player is available, we will try to pick up another second-round
pick.

Whether moving up, back or adding a pick, Morey said he has done the
legwork on several deals. But either way, he said the right player will
be defined as the best player, regardless of position or style.

If only everything else was as clear.

Chinese Online Class - 'Climate change root of Darfur strife'

'Climate change root of Darfur strife'

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-17 10:16

WASHINGTON -- Climate change is partly to blame for the conflict in
Sudan's Darfur region, where droughts have provoked fighting over water
sources, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a newspaper editorial.

"Almost invariably, we discuss Darfur in a convenient military and
political shorthand -- an ethnic conflict pitting Arab militias against
black rebels and farmers," Ban wrote in an editorial that appeared
Saturday in The Washington Post. "Look to its roots, though, and you
discover a more complex dynamic."

Rainfall in Sudan began declining two decades ago, a phenomenon due "to
some degree, from man-made global warming," said Ban, who has made both
Darfur and climate change priorities.

Settled farmers and Arab nomadic herders had gotten along until the
drought, he wrote, but as conditions worsened, water and food shortages
disrupted the peace and "evolved into the full-fledged tragedy we witness
today."

Ban said similar ecological problems are behind conflicts in other
countries, including Somalia and Ivory Coast.

The Darfur conflict began in 2003 when local rebels took up arms against
the Sudanese government, accusing it of decades of neglect. Sudanese
leaders are accused of unleashing the pro-government Arab militia, the
janjaweed, to fight them - a charge they deny.

After months of U.N. and Western pressure, Sudan agreed in the past week
to allow a joint U.N.-African Union force of up to 19,000 peacekeepers to
replace the 7,000-member AU mission now in Darfur.

Ban called the agreement "significant progress" after "four years of
diplomatic inertia." But he warned that a long-term solution was needed
for "the essential dilemma" -- the scarcity of good land.

"Any peace in Darfur must be built on solutions that go to the root
causes of the conflict," he said.

The U.N. chief called for sustained economic development, possibly
involving new irrigation and water storage techniques and efforts to
improve health, education and roads.

"The international community needs to help organize these efforts,
teaming with the Sudanese government as well as the international aid
agencies and nongovernmental organizations working so heroically on the
ground," Ban said.

Learn Mandarin online - Putin suggests Iraq for missile shield

WORLD / Russia

Putin suggests Iraq for missile shield

Updated: 2007-06-09 00:32

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that U.S. missile defense
interceptors could be located in Turkey, or even Iraq or on sea
platforms, offering yet another alternative to an American plan for a
missile shield in eastern Europe.

conference at the end of the G8 Summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, Friday,
June 8, 2007. [AP]

"They could be placed in the south, in U.S. NATO allies such as Turkey,
or even Iraq," Putin said at a news conference after the close of the
Group of Eight summit. "They could also be placed on sea platforms."

Putin's proposal on missile defense interceptors followed his surprise
suggestion Thursday to President Bush to share use of the huge Soviet-era
radar at Gabala in northeast Azerbaijan, now leased by Russia.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Putin's offer of the radar in
Azerbaijan caught the Bush administration off guard, but that it was
worth looking into even while missile defense negotiations with Poland
and the Czech Republic continue.

"One does not choose sites for missile defense out of the blue," she told
The Associated Press. "It's geometry and geography as to how you
intercept a missile."

The latest proposals came after Putin spent weeks bitterly denouncing a
U.S. proposal to build the missile defense system in Poland and the Czech
Republic, to defend against a future missile threat from Iran.

As he spoke Friday, a man threw a handful of leaflets into the air,
momentarily disrupting the briefing.

"Outstanding. Well done," Putin said to him in Russian. After asking the
man for one of the leaflets, which accused the president of ruling like a
czar, he added in German: "Now leave us in peace and give us time to
answer."

The protester, 20-year-old Konstantin Schuckman, a German-Russian dual
citizen, later accused Putin of trampling on democracy, citing recent
crackdowns on dissent and on opposition marches.

It was not immediately clear how he reached the briefing at the summit
site, which is secured by a seven-mile fence and a heavy police presence.
Thousands of journalists and representatives of non-governmental
organizations are accredited to attend the summit.

The United States says the missile defense elements that it wants to
place in Poland and the Czech Republic are aimed at intercepting possible
attacks from Iran and North Korea.

Putin contends that putting the system in Eastern Europe would mean it
could be used against Russia's missiles, thereby undermining the balance
of power in Europe.

But an Iraqi government spokesman criticized Putin's latest proposal.

"We have nothing to do with the missile shield project. Nobody asked us
about this thing. Nobody has the right to speak about or decide an issue
concerning Iraq except for the Iraqi people," Iraqi government spokesman
Ali al-Dabbagh said.

Putin said last week that Russia would aim its missiles at Europe for the
first time since the end of the Cold War if the U.S. plan goes ahead.

With the world's second-largest Shiite Muslim population, secular
Azerbaijan has concerns that Iran's Shiite theocracy could spread and
some analysts suggested that Iran would be angered by U.S. use of the
radar facility.

But Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said the proposal "can only
bring more stability into the region because it can lead to more
predictable actions in the region."

NATO's top diplomat, Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, said he
thought Azerbaijan "a bit close to the rogue states we are discussing"
but welcomed the talks between Bush and Putin at the G-8 summit in
northern Germany, which diplomats say marked a thaw in relations after
weeks of mounting tension.

In Moscow, Russian lawmakers said the United States has no technical
reason to reject the Kremlin proposal for the U.S. to halt construction
of the eastern European defense system in exchange for joint use of the
Russian-leased radar site in Azerbaijan.

But NATO and Pentagon officials raised doubts about the plan, and Pavel
Felgenhauer, an independent expert on Russia's military forces, said the
plan is unworkable from Washington's viewpoint.

"Militarily this makes no sense whatsoever, and the Pentagon is not
interested at all," Felgenhauer said. Washington's support for building a
radar site in the Czech Republic and placing interceptor missiles in
Poland, he said, "have never wavered, and there is no way this can
substitute."

Moscow made the proposal, he said, to give Washington a face-saving way
to abandon its proposed anti-missile system. Washington, he said, hopes
to use negotiations to give the Kremlin a chance to quietly shelve its
objections to the missile shield.

Chinese Lesson - Czech citizens wary of US missile system

Czech citizens wary of US missile system

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Russia isn't alone in disliking the idea of
basing a US missile defense system in the Czech Republic and other
countries on its doorstep.

arrival in Prague, Czech Republic, Monday, June 4, 2007. Bush arrived in

Most Czechs aren't happy about the proposal, either. Recent polls in this
former Soviet satellite, now a democratic NATO ally, show more than 60
percent of the public in opposition.

President Bush arrived Monday evening in the stately old European capital
of Prague for a day of meetings with Czech leaders.

The White House has billed a speech Bush will deliver from the local
headquarters of Radio Free Europe on democracy as the highlight of his
visit here. His Czech counterparts have complaints with Washington to
discuss, such as a two-tiered visa system for European nations that
leaves their citizens out in the cold.

However, the international debate over the missile defense system likely
will drown out everything else during Bush's stay in Prague. The US plan
calls for an anti-missile radar base to be built at the Brdy military
zone southwest of the capital.

For their part, Czech leaders have brushed off Russia's objections,
remaining receptive to the project. Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek called
it "a necessary step which will significantly increase our security and
also the security of our European allies and neighbors."

Most Czech citizens, though, worry about Russian threats to embark on a
new arms race in response, and they fear that the installation could make
the tiny country a terrorist target.

In Prague last weekend, more than 1,000 people protested the plan.
Demonstrators planned to show their displeasure again Tuesday outside
medieval Prague Castle, where Bush was to meet with Topolanek and
President Vaclev Klaus.

Over the weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin stepped up already
incendiary remarks about the US and its intentions with the shield,
warning that Moscow could take "retaliatory steps" including aiming
nuclear weapons at US military bases in Europe.

Russia believes the shield in Eastern Europe is meant for it, and says it
has no choice to boost its own military potential in response.

Bush's national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, called this sort of
talk "not helpful."

Still, he, the president and other US officials have sought to cool down
the situation - to no avail. They insist the network is meant to protect
NATO allies against a missile launch from Iran, not Russia.

The president's speech in Prague could stoke the fires further.

As part of taking stock of "the freedom agenda," Bush plans to mention
Russia as a difficult area, Hadley told reporters traveling Monday with
Bush to Europe on Air Force One.

"He'll talk a little bit about the challenge of promoting democracy in
countries, big countries in particular, where we have a complex
relationship and a number of interests, places like Russia," Hadley said.

He said the speech was not aimed at Russia, and that Bush would handle
that bit of it "in a very responsible way."

Still, the remarks were not likely to be well-received by Putin, with
whom Bush was scheduled to meet two days later in Germany on the
sidelines of the Group of Eight summit.

Chinese Lesson - Diplomats: Iran hinted at suspension

WORLD / Middle East

Diplomats: Iran hinted at suspension

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-31 10:21

MADRID, Spain - Tehran recently suggested a readiness to discuss a
partial suspension of uranium enrichment, but the US and key allies
rejected the overture and Iran pulled back from the idea for starting
talks on its nuclear program, diplomats said Wednesday

Senior Iranian envoy Ali Larijani talks to the media after arriving to
Madrid Barajas airport, Wednesday, May 30, 2007. [AP]

With both sides back at their hard-line stances, an exploratory meeting
Thursday between Iran's chief international negotiator and the European
Union's senior foreign policy official was unlikely to make substantial
headway, the diplomats told The Associated Press.

In another sign of defiance, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
boasted that his country's military has become so strong that no
adversary would risk an attack. "We have passed our point of
vulnerability," he told Iranian state television.

Both Iran and the United States reiterated tough positions ahead of the
Madrid meeting between Iranian envoy Ali Larijani and EU foreign policy
chief Javier Solana.

"Suspension is not the right solution for solving Iran's nuclear issue,"
the Iranian state news agency quoted envoy Larijani as saying before he
flew to Spain.

On arrival in Madrid, he obliquely put the blame for the impasse on the
insistence of the US and its allies that Tehran freeze all enrichment,
referring to "some mischievous moves by some countries."

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, meanwhile, said the world should not
soften demands that Iran halt all disputed nuclear work. "That would be a
very big mistake," she said.

Rice was responding to questions about increasing sentiment in Europe
that the five permanent UN Security Council nations plus Germany - the
powers trying to engage Iran - should drop the demand for an enrichment
freeze as a condition for talks on an incentive package intended to
persuade Iran to rein in its nuclear program.

At their most recent round of talks last month in Turkey, both Larijani
and Solana spoke of progress and agreed to meet again to try to bridge
the divide.

Iran insists it has the right to develop uranium enrichment to produce
fuel for nuclear reactors that would generate electricity, while the
Security Council demands it freeze such activities until Tehran allays
fears it is trying to develop atomic weapons.

Speaking on condition of anonymity because they were discussing
confidential information, diplomats familiar with the issue said at least
part of the optimism after the first meeting was based on Iran's apparent
readiness to discuss a temporary, but partial suspension of enrichment.

Iran was ready to stop some of its centrifuge machines, which can enrich
uranium both to the low level needed for reactor fuel and to high-grade
material used for nuclear warheads, one diplomat said.

Insistence by the US and key Security Council allies Britain and France
that Tehran fully suspend enrichment doomed chances for agreement, the
diplomat said.

"It was clear that those on the Western side did not accept any
centrifuges (running) at all," the diplomat said. "As a result, the
Iranians have gone completely hard-line."

Diplomats said evidence of that surfaced last Friday in Brussels,
Belgium, when Larijani's deputy, Javed Vaidi, met with senior civil
servants of Britain, France and Germany who report directly to their
foreign ministers. Also present was a senior Solana aide.

"It was a disaster," said one of the diplomats, saying the two sides
parted with no signs of progress.

Larijani did leave room for some hope. Before leaving Tehran, he said
Iran wanted to allay the West's concerns over its nuclear program. "We
want to continue our peaceful nuclear program, but others should have no
concerns about it as well," he was quoted as saying.

It was not clear, however, if Larijani's comment signaled that Iran would
take concrete steps to alleviate concerns, such as giving more leeway to
UN inspectors whose monitoring of Iranian nuclear facilities was
curtailed by Tehran after the latest Security Council sanctions.

TT player glut forces Chinese to scatter all over the worlds

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-05-23 08:54

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) uses English as a
working language, but in the ongoing ITTF world championships, the most
spoken tongue is Chinese.

"You are the 150th Chinese to whom I say Ni Hao (hello in Chinese),"
Austra's top women's player Liu Jia said to the reporter.

Liu Jia is one of about 70 former Chinese who represent various countries
and regions in the Zagreb Worlds which attracted over 600 athletes. Add
the players from China and Chinese Taipei, the number of Chinese-speaking
athletes is well over 150.

Ai Fukuhara, the hugely popular Japanese player, speaks fluent Chinese
with a bit Liaoning accent, acquired while playing for the northeastern
Chinese club in 2006.

China is never short of table tennis talents as the country has invested
heavily in the sport since Rong Guotuan claimed the 1959 world singles
championship, the first world title of any sports for China.

"Almost every Chinese plays table tennis and there are so many good
players out there," said the Beijing-born Liu.

"It is very hard to make it to the Chinese national team. For a better
career, I joined the Austrian team," she added.

Beijing has churned out more table tennis expatriates than any Chinese
cities. Zhu Fang (Spain), Li Jia Wei (Singapore), Yang Zi (Singapore),
Zhang Xueling (Singapore), Wu Xue (Dominican Republic), Li Qiangbing
(Austria) and Wang Chen (United States) are all from the Chinese capital.

The women's game of the recent European championships was dominated by
former Chinese. Liu Jia failed to defend her singles honor while the
34-year-old Li Jiao of the Netherlands downed the 44-year-old Ni Xia Lian
of Luxembourg in the final.

When jokingly asked about the official language of world table tennis,
ITTF media chief Arne Madisen quipped: "It's Chinese, of course!"

The all-conquering Chinese team, which has lost only one world title in
the new millennium, sees Singapore as a major threat in Zagreb.

All of the six-member Singapore team came from China. Its women' s
players Li Jia Wei, Wang Yue Gu and Sun Bei Bei are ranked 7th, 9th and
19th in the world.

The top ranked Singaporean men are Gao Ning, 25th, and Yang Zi, 33rd.

"I think Wang Yue Gu is the most dangerous to Chinese women in the
singles event," said Chinese coach Li Sun.

Singapore is coached by another expat Chinese Liu Guodong, whose brother
Liu Guoliang heads the Chinese men's team.

Li Sun's kid sister Li Jun now plays for Japan and another Chinese
national team coach Li Xiaodong is the father of Li Qiangbing, who plays
for Austria.

Qi Baohua, the elder sister of Qi Baoxiang, who coaches the Chinese
second-string women's team, used to play for Hong Kong in the 1990s.

A dozen of Chinese coaches are advising foreign teams in the Zagreb
Worlds. Better known among them are newly-named New Zealand chief Li
Chunli, England head coach Liu Jiayi, Wang Dayong, the mentor of
Belgium's former world No. 1 Jean-Michel Saive, and Liu Yanjun, who
guided Liu Jia to the European singles championship in 2005.

36 dead in Pakistan political violence

KARACHI - Two Pakistani political activists were killed on Sunday in a
second day of violence, raising the specter of bloody ethnic feuding that
plagued Pakistan's biggest city in the 1980s and 1990s.

On Saturday, 34 people were killed and more than 130 wounded in the
country's worst political street violence in two decades, sparked when
Pakistan's suspended top judge tried to meet supporters in the southern
city.

Government attempts to remove Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry over
unspecified accusations of misconduct on March 9 have outraged the
judiciary and the opposition.

The judicial crisis has snowballed into a campaign against President
Pervez Musharraf and is the most serious challenge to the authority of
the president, who is also army chief, since he seized power in 1999.

One person was killed by gunfire in violence that broke out after the
funerals of three opposition supporters killed on Saturday, police said.
In another incident, a member of the pro-government Muttahida Qaumi
Movement (MQM), which runs Karachi, was shot dead in a ethnic Pashtun
part of the city.

Protesters set fire to several shops and cars elsewhere, but overall, the
city was calmer. Most shops were closed and police and paramilitary
troops patrolled largely deserted streets.

"The situation has improved today but it's still tense in some parts of
the city, especially where there have been funerals," said Waseem Akhtar,
the top provincial Interior Ministry official.

Chaudhry, who denies wrongdoing and has refused to resign, flew into
Karachi on Saturday, hoping to meet his supporters. But the violence
prevented him from leaving the airport.

Musharraf condemned the clashes and criticised Chaudhry for ignoring a
government appeal not to go to the volatile city.

In a speech to tens of thousands of supporters in Islamabad on Saturday,
Musharraf ruled out declaring a state of emergency.

He said elections due this year -- first a presidential election followed
by a general election -- would be on time.

ETHNIC DIVISIONS

Mourners at the funeral of two members of an opposition religious
alliance shouted anti-Musharraf slogans and called for an Islamic
revolution as the bodies, draped in party flags, were carried away for
burial.

A top leader of the alliance, Munawar Hassan, told the crowd they should
struggle against "terrorism" peacefully.

The police have been widely criticised for failing to stop Saturday's
clashes between members of the MQM, which opposed Chaudhry's plan to
rally with supporters, and its old enemies.

They include the religious alliance and former prime minister Benazir
Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP).

Most of those killed on Saturday were members of the PPP and the
opposition Awami National Party (ANP), which represents Pashtuns.

Provincial ANP President Afrasiab Khattak said he feared ethnic violence,
saying: "If they fail to control militancy it will divide Karachi on
ethnic lines."

But a PPP leader played down the fear.

"I don't think it's ethnic violence, it's government supporters trying to
beat the opposition into submission," said Raza Rabbani, leader of the
opposition in the upper house.

Lawyers are due to boycott courts across the country on Monday and the
Islamist alliance has called for a nationwide protest strike.
