miranets -

So I have been given this onerous task of mapping out all the vowel and consonant phonemes and
allophones for Mandarin. Consonants, easy enough - but vowels are another nightmare.

Firstly, some "clues" given by my lecturer have all but contradicted standard knowledge that is
out there on the internet. I have always assumed that all initial consonants were phonemes, but as
seen from phonetic distribution the sounds zh- ch- sh- and j- q- x- are allophones. Is anyone else
aware of other consonant allophones?

(looking at a pinyin combination chart such as http://www.pinyin.info/rules/initials_finals.html
helps to point out areas of complementary/contrastive distribution)

As for vowels, I have no idea how to begin looking for allophones. Do I assume there are six
phonemes, a e i o u uu? What about tone?

Does anyone know where to find an IPA vowel chart for Mandarin? (the funny square shape with
back/forward round/unround distinctions)

Thanks

Traditionally 同位 or allophone only apply to initials, not to finals (rimes), if the rimes are
recognised as having the same sound then it wouldn't be a separate rime anymore...

I don't think that it is correct to say /tʂ/, /tʂʰ/, /ʂ/ and /tɕ/, /tɕʰ/, /ɕ/ are
allophones because they don't occur with the same vowels, these phonemes are restricted to their
specific vowel environments, so there are no minimal pair comparisons to be done. You may know
that in many languages the phonemes /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ only occur around specific vowel environments,
they are not allophones.

Allophones in Standard Mandarin are probably /ɻ/|/ʐ/, /p/|/b/, /t/|/d/, /k/|/g/.

I found tow IPA charts for Pinyin, but it's still not complete. Hope helpful.

Can you ellaborate? The statement denies but does not properly argue against the allophonic status
of /ʈʂ/, /ʈʂʰ/, /ʂ/ and /tɕ/, /tɕʰ/, /ɕ/.
(By the way, how do you get these symbols /ʈʂ/, /ʈʂʰ/, /ʂ/, etc displayed correctly on the
computer screen? What font is needed?)

I guess what miranets meant by "allophones for vowels" are those vowels such as in the following
pairs: ban-bang, ben-beng, bin-bing, etc.

I don't see them on my screen either, but if I copy them into Word, they appear correctly in the
font MS Gothic.

miranets -

So from the links provided (thanks ) they are still saying there are 6 vowel phonemes, but how do
you justify the 4 tones, wouldn't they be distinct phonemes? I am so confused...

shibo77 -

My default is the Unicode encoding, and it hasn't displayed anything wrong for me yet. I think it
uses the fonts provided by the SIL. You can look at the chart provided by miranets
(http://www.pinyin.info/rules/initials_finals.html), compare zh/tʂ/, ch/tʂʰ/, sh/ʂ/ and
j/tɕ/, q/tɕʰ/, x/ɕ/, there aren't any overlap, phones carrying semantic meaning in Mandarin
formed from zh/tʂ/, ch/tʂʰ/, sh/ʂ/ exist in different vowel environments from those of j/tɕ/,
q/tɕʰ/, x/ɕ/, so one cannot even make a comparison between zh/tʂ/, ch/tʂʰ/, sh/ʂ/ and
j/tɕ/, q/tɕʰ/, x/ɕ/, they are considered restricted phonemes similar to /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ in
English, but if you want to say they are allophones there has to be a comparison showing that
semantic meaning doesn't change when you change the sound of the word. For example /ɻ/|/ʐ/,
/p/|/b/, /t/|/d/, /k/|/g/, /v/|/u/ could be allophones because pronouncing /b/ instead of the
standard /p/ doesn't change its semantic meaning, similar to in Spanish pronouncing /v/ for /b/ or
/β/, or in English /pʰ/ for /p/.

Tones are not phonemes, tones are tonemes, they are one level higher than phonemes, tones only
exist at the syllabic level in Mandarin.

G8 urges DPRK to return to six-party talks

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-17 09:49:09

(Source: Xinhua)

July 17 - Leaders attending the summit of Group of Eight (G8) nations on
Sunday called on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to
return to the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
"We welcome the unanimously adopted UN Security Council Resolution 1695
which represents the clear and strong will of the international
community," the G8 leaders said in a statement.
The resolution on the DPRK's missile tests, adopted on Saturday, strongly
urges the DPRK to return immediately to the six-party talks without
precondition, abandon all nuclear-related weapons and programs and return
to the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and International
Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
The leaders reaffirmed their full support for the six-party talks and
urged the DPRK "to expeditiously return to these talks without
precondition."
They also called on the DPRK to "reestablish its preexisting commitments
to a moratorium on missile launches," the statement said.

Stock market surges 1.5% to reach 26-month high

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-04 10:08:49

(Source: China Daily)

July 4 - China's stock market closed at a 26-month high yesterday,
boosted by anticipation of Bank of China's (BOC) imminent listing on the
domestic bourse as well as the securities regulator's introduction of
margin trading.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index surged 1.5 per cent to close at
1,697.282 points, reaching its highest level since mid-April 2004. The
Shanghai index has gained more than 10 per cent in the past three weeks.
Bank shares enjoyed great popularity on Monday, driven by expectation of
BOC's July 5 domestic listing. The bank will raise 20 billion yuan
(US$2.5 billion) in the country's largest-ever domestic initial public
offering (IPO).
"BOC's shares have been widely predicted to rise at least 15 per cent on
the first trading day, " She Minhua, a banking analyst with CITIC China
Securities, said. "The fact that BOC shares will go high benefits the
valuation of other banking shares."
Shares in Huaxia Bank Co Ltd yesterday surged 7.1 per cent to close at
4.83 yuan (60 US cents), while shares in the Shenzhen Development Bank,
still in the process of stock reform, climbed 7.14 per cent to 8.1 yuan
(US$1.01).
Yesterday's market was also buoyed by the security regulator's
announcement it would allow qualified brokerages to offer margin trading,
an advanced trading tool that lets investors buy and sell with money and
stocks borrowed from brokerages.
"Margin trading will begin on a trial basis from August 1," the China
Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said in a statement on Sunday.
"Even though the regulator is keeping margin trading to a small-scale
trial basis, the news did send a positive signal about the government's
determination to develop the stock market, and that buoyed investor
confidence," Cheng Weiqing, an analyst with CITIC Securities, said.
"A batch of blue chips shares will go high since those shares will be
selected to trade in margin trading," Cheng said.
Cheng believed that China would not slow down its steps with IPOs, in
particular large ones in the following months, since the new trading tool
would draw more capital to the market.
Brokerages with net capital of at least 1.2 billion yuan (US$150 million)
over the past six months will be allowed to offer the services, and
investors must provide deposits as collateral, according to the CSRC
statement.
Qualified securities firms must have been in the brokerage business for
three years and have effective risk management, it said.
Leading domestic securities firms such as CITIC Securities and Hong Yuan
Securities will be the biggest winners as trading will initially be
confined to a small group of qualified brokerages.
"Those securities firms' revenue will certainly increase as margin
trading will bring them new gains from trading fees as well as interest
earnings," CITIC China Securities' She Minhua said.
Shares in CITIC Securities soared 8.59 per cent to 17.20 yuan (US$2.15)
yesterday. Shares in Xinjiang-based Hong Yuan Securities surged 4.92 per
cent to close at 9.38 yuan (US$1.17).
Analysts believed the regulator would release a series of detailed
trading rules in the following week.
"China has studied for four years the feasibility of margin trading,
which has been a mature trading system in developed countries," Lu Lixin,
a senior analyst with Beijing Securities, said.
"The introduction of the margin trading system, which acts as a lever to
pull more capital into the market, will stimulate and deepen China's
capital markets; but on the other hand, it will also magnify investors'
potential risks due to a lever impact," Lu said.

Not blue-collar workers!

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-21 18:23:58

Chinanews, June 20 C Many college graduates in China cannot find a
satisfactory job today, but on the other hand, the society is in great
shortage of skilled blue-collar workers. Why are people unwilling to be
blue-collar workers? Salary is surely not the only reason, at least not
the foremost one
A poll involving 1,645 people reflects that 38.8% of the responders think
that low income stops people, while 21.8% think that the profession "is
not decent and respectable". The other 37.6 agree that the above two
reasons together cause the shortage of blue-collar workers.
What makes blue-collar work indecent and unrespectable? 66.9% of the
responders believe that the working environment is the first factor,
although it has greatly improved over the last 50 years, and although
many of the blue-collar workers just need to operate the instrument panel
or the computers, most of them still have to operate under very hard
working conditions. No wonder people like the "keyboard and coffee cups"
of office clerks better than the workshops of blue-collar workers.
55.8% of the responders think that there is not enough space for people
to develop themselves in blue-collar work. An elder worker said: "In the
past, a blue-collar worker could even become a committee chairman if he
worked hard enough, while today the position of mere a high-grade
technician is the best result. All the positions at the management level
require diplomas. How can blue-collar workers get such positions? Not
many of them have diplomas, after all. "
Instability of the jobs is another factor that makes blue-collar workers
the unwanted one. With the deepening of the reform of the state-owned
enterprises, the simplification of the structure of the
government-sponsored institutions, the competition in the job market has
become fiercer every day. Compared with the college graduates and the
farmers who want to find a job in the cities, the blue-collar workers are
not competitive enough to keep their jobs, as their average education
level is still relatively low.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is holding a summit meeting
Thursday in China's largest city Shanghai, the birthplace of the
intergovernmental organization that groups China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

SHANGHAI, June 15 - The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is holding a
summit meeting Thursday in China's largest city Shanghai, the birthplace
of the intergovernmental organization that groups China, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The summit started at 9:00 a.m. in the Shanghai International Convention
Center in the Pudong New District, with red carpets and handshakes
between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his counterparts from the other
five member countries -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz
President Kurmanbek Bakiyev,Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajik
President Emomali Rakhmonov and Uzbek President Islam Karimov.
The six heads of state are holding a closed-door meeting after a group
photo was taken.
Later in the morning, other participants to the summit will join them for
"big group talks" -- including representatives from the four observer
countries of Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Iran, and international
organizations. Afghan President Hamid Karzai will attend the talks as a
guest of the host country.
The four observers are represented by Mongolian President Nambaryn
Enkhbayar, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Iranian President Mahmud
Ahmadinejad and Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora.
At the end of the morning session, the presidents of the six SCO member
countries will sign a number of documents including a joint declaration
marking the fifth founding anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization. They will also meet the press.
Thursday's summit is considered a milestone in the SCO's history, which
was established in Shanghai five years ago.
Chinese President Hu Jintao is scheduled to preside over the summit and
give a speech that elaborates on China's policies toward the SCO and
suggestions to push forward the organization's development.
Presidents of the six member countries will review the organization's
achievements in the past five years, outline objectives for future
cooperation and exchange ideas on major international and regional issues.

Folk-custom cultural performance staged

Fujian's Quanzhou City staged a folk-custom cultural performance on the
Wen Temple Square to celebrate the first "Cultural Heritage Day" in China
on June 10. Plenty of civilians were fascinated by characteristic
folk-custom cultural activities, such as an old couple's dance led by a
stove, costumes of the fishing ladies, chest-beating dance and dough
figurine making. Pictured: an artist specializing in Quanzhou's puppet
play was showing a kid a little puppet.

Chongqing discovered early signs of human activity

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-02 15:59:05

Some human activity signs dating back to the New Stone Age (6000-3000 BC)
were discovered at the Dadiping archaeological site of Chongqing's
Yunyang County recently. Person in charge of this archaeological project
introduced that the most ancient articles found at the Dadiping site
belonged to the late New Stone Age dating back 4,500 to 5,000 years.
Currently, this is the only site of the New Stone Age discovered on the
300-odd kilometer-long riverway bank starting from Chongqing Municipality
along the upper reaches to Wushan in the lower reaches of the Three
Gorges reservoir areas. More than 100 items of representative cultural
relics have been excavated at this site, including forged stone
implements and objects made of bone. Pictured: archaeological personnel
were seeking articles in the ash pit of the site.

China to launch four train routes to Tibet

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-09 16:31:57

Chinanews, May 9 - Qinghai-Tibet Railway Corporation Deputy General
Manager Ma Baocheng lately disclosed that the company had preliminarily
confirmed four fixed train routes bound for Lhasa based on the
Qinghai-Tibet railway tourism plan and the arrangement of the Ministry of
Railways.
These four fixed train routes include the Lhasa-Beijing, Lhasa-Chengdu,
Lhasa-Xining and Lhasa-Shanghai (Guangzhou) routes. The first three
routes will be available every day, and the last one will run every other
day.
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway will open to traffic soon, while traveling to
Tibet by train has already become a heated vogue. By far, tickets of the
first six special passage train routes to Lhasa including the one from
Beijing have been booked out.
Tibet Tourism Administration Office Director Liao Lisheng indicated that
after the entire Qinghai-Tibet Railway begins trial operation on July 1
this year, Tibet expects an increase of 3,000 to 4,000 tourists every day
and a growth of 400,000 this year over the tourist volume in 2005. The
tourism authority of Qinghai Province estimates that after the railway
opens to traffic, the number of tourists traveling to Tibet by way of
Qinghai will rise approximately 800,000.
