Not blue-collar workers!

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-21 18:23:58

Chinanews, June 20 C Many college graduates in China cannot find a
satisfactory job today, but on the other hand, the society is in great
shortage of skilled blue-collar workers. Why are people unwilling to be
blue-collar workers? Salary is surely not the only reason, at least not
the foremost one
A poll involving 1,645 people reflects that 38.8% of the responders think
that low income stops people, while 21.8% think that the profession "is
not decent and respectable". The other 37.6 agree that the above two
reasons together cause the shortage of blue-collar workers.
What makes blue-collar work indecent and unrespectable? 66.9% of the
responders believe that the working environment is the first factor,
although it has greatly improved over the last 50 years, and although
many of the blue-collar workers just need to operate the instrument panel
or the computers, most of them still have to operate under very hard
working conditions. No wonder people like the "keyboard and coffee cups"
of office clerks better than the workshops of blue-collar workers.
55.8% of the responders think that there is not enough space for people
to develop themselves in blue-collar work. An elder worker said: "In the
past, a blue-collar worker could even become a committee chairman if he
worked hard enough, while today the position of mere a high-grade
technician is the best result. All the positions at the management level
require diplomas. How can blue-collar workers get such positions? Not
many of them have diplomas, after all. "
Instability of the jobs is another factor that makes blue-collar workers
the unwanted one. With the deepening of the reform of the state-owned
enterprises, the simplification of the structure of the
government-sponsored institutions, the competition in the job market has
become fiercer every day. Compared with the college graduates and the
farmers who want to find a job in the cities, the blue-collar workers are
not competitive enough to keep their jobs, as their average education
level is still relatively low.
